An Introduction to the Deaf French World - is a wonderful introduction to the Deaf French World with topics centering around: French Sign Language, linguistics, Deaf history/culture, education, interpreting, access rights and the work world. Our Deaf roots in America have several connections to the French. Parallels will be drawn between French and American Deaf Worlds. If you are interested in learning more about the language, culture and life style of another country’s Deaf population from a teacher’s travel and exchange perspective this is the workshop for you. Come ready to learn and experiment through an interactive workshop.

Welcome: If you are a member of the Deaf Community, interpreter, teacher, student, parents, history lover, world traveler, and/or have a curious mind you will especially enjoy this movie!
Castéja - The movie - Castéja is a historical documentary created by the INJS-Bordeaux (France’s 2nd National Level Deaf School) Alumni Association, Pédasoft and Melting Signes Deaf French Movie Production Companies. This historical documentary gives viewers an inside look at the famous Castéja building, now an UNESCO protected structure. The building is the only building in the world with statues of the manual alphabet on the building’s façade. Former alumni, teachers (nuns), and city historians provide details and personal reflections of their years at the grand Castéja building. The Academy of Language, Science, and Arts – Bordeaux granted the movie an award for historical documentation. Join us and learn about a very unique aspect of the Deaf French World!
Subtitles: The movie is presented in English Subtitles, French Sign Language, and spoken French.
Presentation Topics: French National Level Deaf Schools with emphasis on Bordeaux – Castéja’s Architectural history, Bordeaux School’s History & Current Location, Question & Answer Session.
Presented by: Rebecca Epple, Deaf Teacher and Deaf French Exchange Founder/Leader.

$9 Presentation and Movie, only – at the door

All information at this event will be presented in American Sign Language. The movie includes French Sign Language and English subtitles.
NOTE: The Community Center is available for adult meetings, only. Children may attend this event with parental supervision.

At 5PM DEAF Adventures will host a brief meeting to discuss various options for the summer 2017 trip which is also open to ADULT participants. We will run TWO trips: one for students and one for adults. WHY? In 2017, America will celebrate 200 years of Deaf Education! Join us to explore the Deaf French World and say THANK YOU to Laurent Clerc!
